the last word

Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones

Quick-fire conversation with the founder of The Black Farmer range of food products, who has recently opened a second farm shop in London.

Was there a moment that changed everything?
Getting my first break in television, thanks to Josh Gallagher. It opened doors and set me on the path to where I am today.

What motivates you?
Making a difference. If I can break barriers and inspire others, then I know I am doing something right.

Can you tell us something about farming that most people don't realise?
If you are from a non-traditional background, getting into farming is incredibly tough. It is something I am passionate about changing.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Do not chase money, chase success. With success, the money will follow.

What is your greatest triumph?
My two children.

What is your biggest regret?
Not having confidence in myself when I was younger.

If you could invite three historical figures to dinner what would you cook for them, who would they be and why?
I would cook rice, peas, and chicken. I would invite Martin Luther King Jr, General Hatton, and Margaret Thatcher. Three leaders in their own right, each with a unique perspective on power, influence, and change.

Favourite song?
'I'm Going All the Way' by Sounds of Blackness. Whatever it takes, you have got to push through.

What's a surprising, fun fact about you?
I trained as a chef and worked in television before getting into farming.

What is one thing you would say to young farmers today?
Engage with urban Britain. Farming needs to be part of the wider conversation.
