Secrets of the Shoreline

As many of us flock to the UK’s rocky shoreline to enjoy cool waters and (hopefully!) sunshine this summer, finding the secrets that hide within the rockpools makes for an adventurous staycation activity - perfect for families who are too restless to sit in the sun all day.
And if you don’t find yourself close to a beach this summer, there are freshwater gems galore in local rivers and streams.
What are you waiting for? The world’s your oyster…grab your bucket and get exploring!

Rockpooling: You’re 'shore' to find some treasure
Head to the coast at low tide and you'll find entire worlds in the rockpools, full of life left behind by the sea. The plants and animals that you will find are extraordinarily tough; adapted to survive the ever-changing conditions of the shoreline, be it fluctuating temperatures, dwindling oxygen levels, harsh sunlight and the rough treatment of the sea, these little creatures survive where few others could. Carefully peer in, and note what you can see.

What to look for:
Crabs – Green shore crabs and and hermit crabs are frequently seen in rock pools. Gently lift seaweed to spot them hiding.
Sea anemones – Watch their tentacles wave in the water - like pretty underwater flowers.
Limpets and barnacles – Fixed tightly to rocks, these little creatures will not be swayed.
Shrimp and blennies – Fast and elusive, you’d be lucky to spot one.
Starfish – A common favourite, find these pretty invertebrates clinging to rocks.

Just around the riverbend
If you live somewhere land-locked but still want a fun adventure with the kids, head to your nearest river or stream to discover an abundance of wildlife and plant species. You might be surprised at the number of unusual birds, mammals and fish that can be spotted along UK canals and rivers.

What to look for:
Birds – See if you can spot vibrant kingfishers, regal herons, and unusual ducks like the mandarin.
Mammals – Cute otters and water voles can often be spotted alongside the river banks. Hopefully, we’ll soon be able to spot beavers, as they are being reintroduced in some areas.
Fish – Atlantic salmon and brown trout are known to migrate up-stream during spawning season. Keep your eyes peeled for other species like barbel, bream and pike.
Insects – Mayflies, damselflies and dragonflies are known to dart around rivers, especially in the warmer months.
